15 EU Countries Support Outsourcing Migration and Asylum Policies

Published:

Due to rising irregular immigration and the need for new solutions, 15 EU member states, led by Denmark, have proposed for outsourcing migration and asylum management. The EU agreed to the New Pact on Migration and Asylum after nearly four years of discussions.
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Romania, and Finland favor aiding refugees in their home countries rather than managing irregular movement inside Europe. Like Turkey, Tunisia, and Egypt, they propose “comprehensive, mutually beneficial and durable partnerships” with important migrant route nations.

The Italy-Albania treaty lets Rome outsource up to 36,000 refugee claims yearly. Expanding this concept and finding ways to rescue and relocate migrants at sea to non-EU nations is suggested.
Denmark, which started this call, is not bound by the New Pact since it left the Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice. A coalition of 15 nations applauds the New Pact but calls for “complementary efforts,” including “return hub mechanisms” outside the EU for rejected asylum seekers awaiting deportation. They recommend transferring asylum seekers to “safe third countries” to relieve national authorities.
The signatories stress the necessity of following international laws including the non-refoulment principle and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Their recommendations involve reorienting EU migration policy to better address migratory issues. More than half of the 27 member states support outsourcing migration management, suggesting it might be a major issue following the European Parliament elections.
