Structure of the Tarbell Fellowship

Newsroom Placement: Fellows will complete a nine-month placement working as reporters within leading news organizations such as Bloomberg, The Guardian, NBC News, Time, The Verge, and other prominent outlets, enabling them to further develop and refine their journalism skills.

Training Course: Participants will undertake a comprehensive 10-week learning program focused on core principles of artificial intelligence and journalism, ensuring they build both technical understanding and reporting expertise.

Fellowship Summit: Prior to beginning their newsroom assignment, fellows will join a one-week summit held in the San Francisco Bay Area, providing opportunities for networking, workshops, and discussions with experts in the field.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Early-career journalists from all across the world are encouraged to apply for the fellowship.
  • While prior newsroom experience, including work with student publications, is advantageous but not required, applicants should exhibit a strong enthusiasm for journalism.
  • Candidates must demonstrate a strong interest in artificial intelligence and how it affects society; experience in machine learning, tech reporting, or AI governance is advantageous.

  • Strong writing skills, such as inventive storytelling, rapid comprehension of novel ideas, and the ability to produce captivating content under pressure, are crucial.
  • Participants should be open-minded, determined to find the truth, open to helpful criticism, and committed to improving their writing and thinking abilities on a constant basis.

Benefits:

  • For those just starting out in their research careers, a funding package between $60,000 and $80,000 is offered.
  • The salary range for senior-level fellows is $90,000 to $110,000, which is commensurate with their greater experience and level of competence.
  • All travel costs required to participate in the fellowship will be reimbursed.
  • For the duration of the program, lodging is provided.
  • To assist foreign applicants in completing the necessary trip paperwork, visa sponsorship will be offered.
