England secured the top spot in Group C with a 0-0 draw against Slovenia on Tuesday. Despite the result, questions linger about England’s status as one of the favorites for Euro 2024.
Underwhelming Performance
England dominated possession with 71% but failed to impress, creating few real chances and facing boos from their traveling fans at full-time. This performance followed two earlier lackluster games: a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark.
Gareth Southgate’s side showed some improvement in the second half after introducing Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer, but they never seriously threatened Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Slovenia’s Historic Qualification
While England’s performance was disappointing, Slovenia celebrated a historic milestone by qualifying for the European Championship knockouts for the first time as one of the best third-placed teams. Denmark also drew 0-0 with Serbia, finishing second in the group.
Match Highlights
England thought they had scored early when Bukayo Saka tapped in a pass from Phil Foden, but Foden was offside. England struggled to create significant chances, and Slovenia, although comfortable on the ball at times, lacked the quality to capitalize on their opportunities.
Southgate started Conor Gallagher alongside Declan Rice in midfield but substituted Gallagher for Mainoo at halftime, which slightly improved England’s intensity. Despite this, Slovenia remained comfortable, allowing England to pass without much threat.
Chelsea forward Cole Palmer made his debut in the tournament, coming on for Saka after 70 minutes, but England’s approach remained largely unchanged. A late chance for Palmer, set up by Harry Kane, was easily saved by Oblak.
Looking Ahead
England’s slight second-half improvement may lead Southgate to reconsider his starting lineup for the knockout stages. Despite the underwhelming group stage performances, England has advanced to the last 16, where they will need to address their issues to progress further in the tournament.
