Paris 2024 Olympics Green Ambitions Compromised by Air Conditioning Demand

Published:

The Paris 2024 Olympics were set to be the most environmentally friendly Games in history. However, the dream of a “green” Olympics is facing challenges as organizers have been compelled to order 2,500 air-conditioning units.

Original Eco-Friendly Plan

The Paris Olympic Village was initially designed to be eco-friendly, utilizing a geothermal cooling system. This system pumps cold water from deep underground to maintain indoor temperatures at least 6°C lower than the outside heat. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo had emphasized the importance of making the Games environmentally exemplary.

Shift in Plans Due to Health Concerns

Despite the green ambitions, there has been significant pushback from Olympic delegations concerned about the health and comfort of athletes. In response, organizers have allowed countries to order portable air-conditioning units at their own expense, leading to a demand for 2,500 units.

Sustainability Goals

Paris 2024 had set ambitious sustainability goals, aiming to cut the carbon footprint to 1.58 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, a significant reduction compared to previous Games like London 2012 and Rio 2016. Measures included minimizing new construction, using wood and low-carbon cement, and incorporating salvaged materials.

Challenges Ahead

The pressure is on Paris, the home of the Paris Agreement, to deliver an eco-friendly Olympics. The introduction of air conditioning units represents a setback in achieving these goals, highlighting the ongoing tension between sustainability and practicality in large-scale events.

The balance between ensuring athlete safety and maintaining environmental commitments will continue to be a crucial issue as the Games approach.
