As a result of the South American leader’s comparison of Israel’s war on Gaza to Hitler’s treatment of Jews, Brazil has recalled its Ambassador to Israel, and Israel has stated that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is not welcome in the country. This comes as a result of a diplomatic split that has arisen after the South American leader made the comparison.
The actions taken by Brazil, which included calling the Israeli Ambassador for a meeting, were verified by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday. This came after Israeli officials issued a formal rebuke to Brazil’s Ambassador to that nation in response to Lula’s comment that was made on Saturday.
The President of Brazil, who is known by his nickname Lula, stated at the time that “what is happening in the Gaza Strip with the Palestinian people has no parallel in other historical moments.”
Lula made this statement in reference to Nazi war crimes committed during World War II during a meeting of the African Union that took place over the weekend in Addis Ababa. “In fact, it did exist when Hitler decided to kill the Jews,” Lula remarked.
In the early hours of Monday, Israel Katz, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel, made the announcement that Lula is not permitted to visit the Middle Eastern nation unless he retracts his statements.
“Neither will we forget, nor will we forgive. A terrible anti-Semitic attack has been committed. According to a statement released by Katz’s office, Katz gave the following message to the Ambassador of Brazil: “In my name and the name of the citizens of Israel – tell President Lula that he is persona non grata in Israel until he takes it back.”
The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it will appoint Daniel Zonshine, the Israeli Ambassador to Brazil, to attend a conference in Rio de Janeiro, where Brazil’s highest-ranking diplomat is currently attending a G20 gathering.
The Palestinian organization known as Hamas has been responsible for sending fighters into Israel on October 7th, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, the majority of whom were civilians, and the capture of 253 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.
Nevertheless, since then, it has been disclosed by Haaretz that the Israeli army’s helicopters and tanks had, in reality, been responsible for the deaths of a significant number of the 1,139 soldiers and civilians that Israel asserted had been killed by the Palestinian Resistance.
Since then, Israel’s air and ground onslaught has wreaked havoc on a significant portion of Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 29,000 individuals, the majority of whom were civilians, as reported by Palestinian health authorities. Additionally, the attack has compelled virtually all of Gaza’s more than 2 million residents to leave their homes.
