Egyptian Wrestler Accused of Sexual Assault and Arrested in Paris
A 26-year-old Egyptian Olympic wrestler was taken into custody by Parisian authorities on suspicion of sexual assault. The athlete is accused of groping a woman from behind at a café in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, close to the Austerlitz quay, early on Friday morning.
The wrestler was apparently drunk when he was taken into custody. The Egyptian delegation recognized him as Mohamed Elsayed, a Greco-Roman wrestler who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Elsayed, who was competing in the Olympics in Paris, lost on Wednesday in the round of 16. As a result, she may face severe legal repercussions.
The Olympic Committee of Egypt has declared an investigation into the incident; the Egyptian Wrestling Federation has not yet responded to this development. The Committee stated that Elsayed might be barred from competition for life if found guilty.
Given the athlete’s status and the specifics of the claims against him, this episode has raised serious concerns. French authorities are still looking into the situation.
