Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Secretary-General, has boldly called on India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is in India. Fakhrul argues Hasina is trying to destroy Bangladesh’s student-led “revolution,” which is crucial to its democratic future.
Fakhrul claimed that Hasina fled Bangladesh to escape the student movement and is now sabotaging Bangladesh’s success in India. After commemorating BNP founder Zia-ur Rahman, Fakhrul slammed India for sheltering Hasina, purportedly violating democratic norms.
He stressed that Hasina’s purported acts had harmed Bangladesh’s independence and progress for 15 years. Since the Awami League administration established many obstacles, Fakhrul says the interim government’s main purpose is to restore power to elected lawmakers through fair elections, which would take time.
India backs a stable, peaceful, and democratic Bangladesh. The clamor for Hasina’s extradition highlights political tensions and the high stakes of Bangladesh’s impending election.
