After three days of intense talks, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing to ease tensions between the two global superpowers. The meetings before the November US elections emphasise the significance of handling the complex US-China relationship.
Taiwan, the South China Sea, and economic security were discussed at the 14-hour meeting. Xi stressed China’s commitment to a stable US partnership and called for global solidarity over division. According to Sullivan, President Biden is committed to avoiding conflict and supporting cooperation.
Despite extensive dialogue, economic and trade problems remain contentious. However, military communications improved when US Indo-Pacific command chiefs and their Chinese counterparts agreed to direct conversations. This action may lessen military errors in the region.
Sullivan’s discussion with Zhang Youxia, Xi’s close military ally, showed how important it is for both nations to avoid conflict. These negotiations are crucial to managing and defusing tensions in the South China Sea and elsewhere.
A conversation between President Biden and President Xi is possible after the Sullivan-Xi talks, which set the groundwork for future high-level encounters in a geopolitically unpredictable world.
