Iran’s Alarming Surge in Executions: Over 400 Deaths in 2024 Raise Global Concern

Published:

UN experts warn that Iran has executed over 400 people in 2024, a shocking increase in human rights breaches. This statistic, which includes 15 women, shows a worrying rise in capital sentences, with at least 81 executions in August, up from 45 in July.

The 11 independent UN rights experts are alarmed by this surge. Only China executes more people than Iran, highlighting its status as a capital penalty leader. Last month saw 41 drug executions, a noteworthy increase. Following nearly 400 drug-related executions in Iran last year, this trend is concerning.

Experts oppose Iran’s executions, citing due process difficulties. The execution of Kurdish protester Reza Rasaei on August 6 is seen as a symbol of Iran’s justice system’s shortcomings. After protesting with a sign reading “Women, Life, Freedom.” Rasaei was hanged for murdering an Islamic Revolution Guards Corps member.

UN experts say these executions violate international standards and need worldwide action. The surge in executions, especially drug offenses, calls for reform and international attention. Global attention raises calls for justice and human rights.
