About 8,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar’s Rakhine state in recent months to escape bloodshed caused by the military junta’s fight with the Buddhist-majority Arakan Army. The Bangladeshi authorities verified this frightening influx, saying most refugees came within two months.
Bangladesh is striving to house and support over one million Rohingya in overcrowded camps. Senior official Mohammad Shamsud Douza said the country is full and cannot accept more people.
Myanmar’s violence has escalated since the 2017 military crackdown, which the UN called genocide. Recent conflicts are Rohingya’s deadliest since that tragic period. As Bangladesh’s resources dwindle, the government will convene urgent talks on crisis management and preventing more influxes.
Rohingya refugees, many of whom live with relatives in cramped conditions, have requested urgent aid. Bangladeshi officials want India and other nations to share the responsibility and persuade the Arakan Army to stop its attacks.
The international community is under pressure to help Bangladesh handle the refugee influx and alleviate Rohingya suffering.
