Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan marathon runner who had just recently raced in the Olympics in Paris, has tragically passed away after being set on fire by her lover in a case of domestic violence.
After the assault, which took place in the athlete’s residence in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya, she was in severe condition with burns covering 75% of her body. The attack took place in Kenya.
As a result of an argument about land, her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, is said to have doused her in gasoline and set her fire. During the event, Ndiema was also hurt, and she is currently undergoing medical care. Cheptegei perished as a result of her injuries, which were caused by failure of many organs, despite the efforts of the medical team.
Outrage has been aroused as a result of the incident, with Cheptegei’s family blaming Kenyan authorities of incompetence. They stated that they had previously reported Ndiema’s aggressive conduct, but no action was taken in response to their initial report. There have been expressions of grief from the governments of Uganda and Kenya, as well as from organizations that are involved in sports. This tragedy is the most recent in a string of violent attacks against female athletes in Kenya, and it brings to light the rising concern over violence based on gender.
As a clear reminder of the necessity of taking better action to safeguard women and against domestic abuse, Cheptegei’s murder serves as a striking reminder.
