Bangladesh Seeks Extradition of Sheikh Hasina for Mass Killing Charges Following Student-Led Protests

Published:

After widespread anti-government rallies, Bangladesh is preparing to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India for mass deaths. Students’ July and August protests killed over 1,000 people, causing Hasina to quit and flee to India on August 5.

Hasina and nine others are being charged with genocide and crimes against humanity by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The extradition deal with India will be used to send Hasina back to trial, according to Chief Prosecutor Md. Tajul Islam.

“We will apply for arrest warrants and begin the process to bring the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, to justice,” he told a Dhaka press conference. He also noted that gathering proof nationwide is difficult.

As former officials resigned after Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus formed an interim administration, the tribunal will have new judges and investigators.

After one of its darkest political chapters, Bangladesh is bracing for a turning point in its history as it pursues extradition.
