Algeria Opens World’s Third-Largest Mosque Before Ramadan

Published:

Sunday saw Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune inaugurate the Grand Mosque of Algiers. The world’s third-biggest mosque and Africa’s largest, Djamaa El-Djazair, can accommodate 120,000 worshippers.
In October 2020, the mosque began praying, but President Tebboune was sick with COVID-19.
At 267 meters, the Grand Mosque of Algiers has the world’s tallest minaret. Visitors have a stunning view from the mosque’s elevators and observation terrace.
Its architecture has drawn praise, yet some have criticized the mosque. His critics say it was a personal project by former leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The seven-year building time and $800 million price tag have angered opponents.
The Grand Mosque of Algiers symbolizes Algeria’s rich culture and religion. As the nation prepares for Ramadan, the newly inaugurated mosque will help attendees feel connected and community.
