Israel’s military activities in Lebanon have escalated dangerously beyond Gaza, targeting civilians and violating its sovereignty. Early in the week, hundreds of Israeli-rigged pagers exploded throughout Lebanon, killing Hezbollah militants and civilians. A day later, walkie-talkies exploded, increasing the fatality toll.
Israel attacked a Beirut residential area on Friday, apparently targeting Hezbollah Radwan Force leader Ibrahim Aqil. The Lebanese health ministry reported 70 deaths, including children. These strong moves have stoked worries of a regional conflagration after Israel’s defense minister shifted focus to Hezbollah.
Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah called these strikes a “declaration of war.” After the October 7 Gaza attacks, Israel and Hezbollah renewed their antagonism, which dates back to Lebanon’s freedom in 2000. Hezbollah may enlist regional partners if Israeli strikes on Lebanese civilians continue.
De-escalation requires a Gaza ceasefire and responsibility for non-combatant targeting. Without these steps, the area might plunge into a devastating war with global repercussions.
