Modi’s Statehood Promise for Kashmir: Genuine Outreach or Political Play?

Published:

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s promise to restore Kashmir’s statehood has sparked hope and doubt as local elections near their end. In 2019, New Delhi took over Kashmir, inciting regional discontent. Modi made a rally vow to quell anger, but analysts doubt his sincerity.

Statehood has conditions, as promised. The centrally selected Lieutenant Governor will wield actual influence over the newly elected government under the reorganized arrangement. Public order and police remain outside the elected government’s control, making Kashmiris distrust the BJP’s intentions.

Critics say Modi’s promise is an election ploy to win regional support without providing real autonomy. The National Conference and People’s Democratic Party in the opposition want Article 370, which protected Kashmir’s autonomy for decades, reinstated.

Kashmir’s political future is uncertain due to mistrust and unmet promises. The fight for regional sovereignty continues, but Modi’s declaration may be a tactic to stay in power.
