Recent exit polls show the opposition Congress party leading two critical state elections, which the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is expected to lose. In Haryana, Congress is expected to break the BJP’s decade-long rule under Narendra Modi. The exit polls also favor the opposition in Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir.
The phased elections, which ended on Saturday, have produced much expectation for Tuesday’s vote count and results. Exit polls can reveal public sentiment and electoral patterns, although they are not always reliable. These state elections are a turning point for the BJP, which struggled in the recent national elections.
In November, Maharashtra, India’s economic powerhouse, and Jharkhand, noted for its mineral wealth, will have provincial elections. The Jammu and Kashmir elections are the first in a decade since Modi’s 2019 revocation of the region’s semi-autonomous status.
As the political landscape changes, the BJP’s dominance in key regions will be tested, setting the stage for a dynamic election landscape in the coming months.
