Exhausted and Displaced: Life in Gaza One Year After the War

Published:

Gaza is destroyed one year after Hamas’s attack on Israel started conflict, and its citizens are exhausted and displaced. Khaled al-Hawajri, 46, said, “It felt like the first day of the war all over again,” as Israeli forces bombed his neighborhood on the war’s anniversary. According to Hawajri, “there is no safe place in the entire Strip.” Many Gazans have been moved regularly.

Buildings are gone, roads are ruined, and fuel shortages force residents to walk or ride donkey carts in Gaza. Hussam Mansour, 64, says, “There is no electricity, no food, and even firewood is scarce.” He was displaced like 90% of Gaza’s 2.4 million residents after his flat was destroyed.

Gaza’s 92% roads and 84% health facilities are damaged or destroyed, according to the UN. Israel continues its military efforts to liberate Hamas hostages from the 2023 attack, with no end in sight.

War trauma persists as residents suffer disease, hunger, and loss. Al-Muqayyid states, “A year has gone, and we have seen every kind of suffering,” echoing war-weary people.
