Italian Foreign Minister Condemns Rocket Attack on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon

Published:

Italy’s foreign minister has denounced the rocket attack on United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon.

Italy’s Foreign Minister has frowned at a rocket that struck a UNIFIL base in Shama southern Lebanon that left four Italian soldiers in a critical condition. The rockets, which was attributed to Hezbollah or one of its allies, signaled a new and more dangerous phase in the current sectarian war in the Middle East.

Hezbollah is an enemy of Israel, and it attacked UN peacekeepers, while Israel too targeted those soldiers,” said Antonio Tajani. All such actions are prohibited the tribe’s assertion and legislation put into practice renders it beyond acceptable. Perhaps if Hezbollah cannot handle their weapons, then they should get out altogether. The first media reports showed that the rockets hit districts of the base where the peacekeepers sheltered.

This incident is a continuation of attacks on UNIFIL position since the Israel launched a ground attack on Lebanon on October. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni also condemned the attack and demanded the investigation and punishment of the culprits as soon as possible.

The head of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Andrea Tenenti, said that hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah or its allies are highly active along the entire border and southern Lebanon, specifically in the Naqoura and Chamaa regions.

The attack was carried out at a time of renewed tensions in the region, with the recent arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as well as a Hamas military leader. The ICC claims that they committed war crimes and crimes against humanity while at war with Gaza and the invasion of Israel in the October 2023.

The war has been killed thousands of people; Gaza’s Health Ministry recorded over 44,000 Palestinian deaths since the start of the conflict. The Israeli military stated that it has killed 17 000 militants during the fighting but failed to submit any evidence to support this statement. As and while, the people of the affected regions in the Israel-Lebanon border line are forced to flee their homes as Hezbollah and Israeli troops exchange incessant shooting.

Things have worsened after Israel began conducting ground attacks in Lebanon and now has about 15,000 of its troops in the country.
