Czech and French Leaders Promise Ukraine Support Despite Russian Aggression

Published:

In solidarity, Czech President Petr Pavel and French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to seek new ways to help Ukraine in its battle with Russia. Pavel stressed the need for Europe to help Ukraine more in a joint statement but ruled out sending combat troops, repeating Macron’s position from last week.

“We haven’t talked about it at all,” Pavel said, stressing assistance conversations. Macron agreed, emphasizing the need to stop Russia from winning the conflict. He said European nations can’t limit Russia’s unrestrained approach, including nuclear weapons.

Macron’s strategy stressed logical answers to Europe’s changing position. He directly questioned Russian President Vladimir Putin’s boundaries and blamed him for the situation.

The leaders’ support for Ukraine went beyond words. Pavel announced a Czech proposal to buy 800,000 artillery rounds for Ukraine. Around 15 countries supported the concept, including Britain, Belgium, Denmark, Canada, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Macron revealed a long-term French-Czech strategic collaboration plan for nuclear energy, defense, transport, research, and culture during his visit. Both countries depend on nuclear electricity, with the Czech Republic seeking bids for four reactors. Macron supported Czech plan, and a 2024-25 contract for the selected project is likely.

CEZ also contracted with Orano to enrich uranium, lowering dependence on Russia. The provided uranium will feed the Dukovany nuclear facility, boosting energy security.

The collaboration highlights a diversified approach to supporting Ukraine and a long-term strategic cooperation between the Czech Republic and France.
