In an unexpected change of events, Russia and Ukraine reported a wave of drone assaults at night. Ukraine’s Armed Forces General Staff reported intercepting 12 of Russia’s 15 Shahed drones overnight. On high alert, Ukrainian air defenses stopped drone attacks over Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, and Poltava Oblasts.
Ukrainian army courageously battled against aircraft attacks in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, causing explosions in the suburbs. The Russian Ministry of Defence responded by claiming to have shot down 47 drones in four locations. Much of this counteroffensive targeted Taganrog in Rostov, where 41 drones were destroyed.
Governor Vasiliy Golubev of Rostov Oblast stated via Telegram, “Our air defense forces repelled a massive drone attack in Taganrog.” Despite early claims of no deaths, a Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations employee was injured following the drone attack.
Unconfirmed Russian Telegram claims suggest targeting the Taganrog Beriev aircraft facility. The plant, known for making and repairing military aircraft, may have been affected by the strike, but Ukraine has not responded.
The world watches regional tensions rise with bated breath. This midnight fight between Russia and Ukraine highlights the changing nature of contemporary warfare and the problems both nations face in defending their borders. Drones were strategically used.
