China Freezes: Record Cold

Published:

On Wednesday, severe weather warnings were issued for an extensive portion of China. Temperatures dropped significantly over the southern region of the country, and Beijing was shivering in snowy circumstances.
Temperatures in the south, which are presently hovering around zero degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit), are expected to drop by six to twelve degrees Celsius by Friday, according to the authorities, who maintained an orange alert, which is the highest level of the three-tiered system that the country uses to warn about weather conditions.
According to the National Meteorological Center (NMC), temperatures could drop by more than 20 degrees Celsius in certain regions. This information was shared on social media. Xinhua, the state-owned news agency, informed the public that the National Meteorological Commission (NMC) has “called on local governments to take precautions against the cold weather, advised the public to keep warm, and called for necessary measures to protect crops and aquatic products.”

In Beijing, where temperatures remained around freezing on Wednesday, residents awakened to find the capital city coated in white as a result of snowfall that occurred overnight. On the city’s roadways, traffic came to a complete standstill, and pavements that had been coated with snow made it extremely hazardous for commuters and bicycles to travel.
It was reported by the municipal authorities that snowfall of up to 4.1 centimeters (1.6 inches) had occurred in several suburban regions, and they issued a warning about the ice roadways.
A statement issued by the municipal government on Tuesday evening was posted online and read as follows: “It is recommended that residents stagger their travel, use public buses and subways, drive their own cars slowly, and pay attention to safety.”
