‘Oppenheimer’ Clinches Multiple Wins at SAG Awards

Published:

The 30th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards saw Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” maintain its winning streak. The film won for best film cast, bolstering its Oscar chances. Cillian Murphy, as scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer, won best movie actor, while Robert Downey Junior won best supporting actor.

Downey Jr. thanked and joked, “Why me? Why now? Why is everything going my way?” These awards, along with Golden Globe and BAFTA triumphs, boost the blockbuster’s Oscar chances.

SAG awards, a predecessor to the Academy Awards, have enormous effect because performers vote the most for the Oscars. All five top SAG rewards have matched Oscar winners in the past two years. However, SAG success doesn’t ensure Oscar victory.

The celebration followed SAG-AFTRA’s four-month strike against Hollywood studios last year, demanding better pay and job security. Several projects were canceled or delayed due to the strike.

Idris Elba opened the ceremony by saying, “It is especially meaningful to be here with us all together again, for this occasion, after going through a very difficult time with the strike.”

Best female actor Lily Gladstone of “Killers of the Flower Moon” and supporting actress Da’Vine Joy Randolph of “The Holdovers.” On television, Ali Wong and Steven Yeun won best female and male limited series actors. “The Bear” won best comedy series, and Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri won.
