EU foreign affairs leader Josep Borrell said Monday that Israel helped create Hamas. In response to questioning regarding his January comments during Israel’s confrontation with Hamas in Gaza, Borrell said, “I do not say that (Israel) financed it by sending a cheque, but it has enabled the development of Hamas” as a challenger to Fatah. He stressed the “unquestionable reality” that Israel sought to split Palestinians and weaken Fatah at a Madrid business school meeting.
After Hamas terrorists stormed southern Israel on October 7, an AFP count based on Israeli numbers estimated 1,160 civilian fatalities. The Gaza health ministry reported 29,782 casualties, mostly women and children, during Israel’s military attack.
Borrell maintained his support for the two-state solution, although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has denied funding Hamas. It’s important to highlight that Hamas’ beginnings are multifaceted, connected with Palestinian history and politics. Blaming Israel for its establishment is not universally accepted. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a hot topic worldwide.
