The BAPS Hindu Mandir, Abu Dhabi’s first Hindu temple, was dedicated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the expanding strategic and commercial relations between India and the United Arab Emirates. Built with pink sandstone columns capped by seven spires, symbolizing the monarch of each emirate, the expansive 27-acre temple is the largest in the United Arab Emirates. Even though the UAE’s official religion is Islam, Modi’s visit highlights India’s growing stature internationally and his responsibility as a defender of Hinduism. The controversial ceremony for the Ram Mandir in India was followed by the opening of the Abu Dhabi Temple, further solidifying Modi’s reputation as a defender of Hinduism. According to analysts, Modi’s participation in the temple’s opening would improve his party’s position in the next elections. Modi’s strategic trips to the United Arab Emirates, which include his third visit in the past eight months, highlight the strengthening security and economic ties between the two countries. India wants to strengthen strategic alliances, safeguard energy supplies, and increase its influence in the Middle East. This cooperation is strengthened by the UAE’s involvement in a new trade route that links Europe and the Middle East with India. Like other Gulf governments, the UAE hopes to broaden its strategic alliances, but analysts believe it is unlikely to publicly condemn Modi’s government for how it treats Muslims. Reiterating India’s worldwide religious and cultural legacy, the BAPS temple is viewed as a political and cultural undertaking. The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, the governments of India and the United Arab Emirates, and others collaborated on the temple’s construction. The UAE, home to almost 3.5 million Indian citizens, has given land for the construction of the temple, signifying a major victory for the Indian diaspora. Participating in these kinds of international events is thought to be a way for Modi to portray India’s soft power and win over important voter categories.
