Zelensky Calls on West to Increase Air Defense After Russian Drone Hits Odesa

Published:

Following a drone strike in Odesa that killed at least five people, including a three-year-old, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged Western partners to provide more air defense systems. Zelensky accused Russia of “waging war on civilians” and stressed the necessity for more air defenses to defend Ukrainians.

Five people were killed, eight wounded, and numerous missing after a nine-story apartment structure in Odesa was destroyed. The president encouraged Western nations to supply more air defense systems and missiles to Ukraine’s air shield against Russia.

The conflict’s drone warfare intensified overnight as Ukraine’s air force downed 14 or 17 Russian drones. Russian forces have used Iranian drones, forcing Ukraine to attack Russian locations, notably oil infrastructure.

Approximately 100 people were evacuated when a drone hit a residential building in St. Petersburg, Russia. The cause has not been confirmed, although Russian media have suspected a downed Ukrainian drone.

Eastern front strategy has changed in the three-year battle. After Avdiivka fell last month, Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s armed forces commander-in-chief, announced a commander replacement plan. Ukrainian soldiers confront obstacles due to the evacuation from two neighboring villages and Western partners’ weaponry and ammunition shortages.

Gen Syrskyi pledged to help troops in need and hailed battlefield resilience. Military leaders say the situation is challenging but managed. As Ukraine struggles with Russian methods, Zelensky’s request for help is urgent.
