LeBron James becomes the first NBA player with 40,000 points

LeBron James became the first NBA player to score 40,000 points. Basketball history is made here. The Lakers achieved the milestone Saturday in their 124-114 loss to the Denver Nuggets at Crypto.com Arena.

LeBron sealed his legacy with a left-handed layup early in the second quarter, drawing roaring ovation. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer had already eclipsed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mark from the previous season.

After a Lakers timeout, the crowd applauded James and teammates gave him high fives. A video tribute highlighted this astounding feat during the timeout.

Before starting the game, 39-year-old James was nine points shy of 40,000. After Thursday’s win over the Wizards, he said, “Is it significant? Without a question. Why not? We appreciate milestones when they happen, but I never contemplate them while battling.”

The record was set in a defeat to the Denver Nuggets, although James ended with 26 points and nine assists. He has an impressive 40,017 lifetime points.

Anthony Davis, the Lakers’ center, felt no one could surpass LeBron’s scoring record. “It’s just tough because he’s not finished playing, so it’s only going to increase, and that gap is going to get bigger and bigger,” Davis.

In his 21st season, LeBron James is still impactful. He averages 25.3 points, 7.9 assists, and 7.1 rebounds this season. The first NBA player to be selected for 20 All-Star teams, he scores well. Lakers are 10th in Western Conference with 33-29 record.
