In southwestern France, strong floodwaters carried away automobiles, leaving seven people, including two children, missing. Gard and Ardeche had “extremely violent episodes” of severe rains overnight, according French interior minister Gerald Darmanin.
Search and rescue activities are ongoing for six Gard and one Ardeche persons. The missing people were in abandoned automobiles carried away by floods. Divers and rescue crews are searching Gard for three family members who disappeared after their car was stolen about 11:30 pm. Tragic events occurred when the family’s car crossed a submerged bridge. The 40-year-old woman was rescued by firemen and sent to the hospital, but her husband and two children, ages 4 and 13, are missing.
The prefecture secretary-general, Frederic Loiseau, recognized the difficulty of estimating the missing people’s recovery pace. The search involves 32 firemen, 20 water rescuers, 21 vehicles, two drones, a K9 squad, and a police aircraft. In another Gard incident, two 47- and 50-year-old ladies went lost on an underwater bridge to Spain. A search operation with 28 firemen, a drone, and a helicopter followed their 5:10 am emergency call dropping.
Also missing is a 62-year-old Belgian man whose car was washed away in a village north of Gard. Gard has had its worst floods in a decade. Around 250 firemen and four helicopters responded to events overnight, demonstrating the gravity of the situation.
The manager of a hydroelectric facility in Ardeche went missing on Saturday evening, complicating search and rescue operations. The region’s flood aftermath highlights the necessity for comprehensive catastrophe response.
