Putin Announces Nuclear Preparedness During Elections

Published:

In a state media interview, President Vladimir Putin said Russia would use nuclear weapons if it felt threatened. He stressed that “there has never been such a need” for such harsh actions. The statements came ahead of the March 15 presidential elections, when Putin is poised to win a fifth term amid a third year of conflict in Ukraine.

In an interview with Rossiya 1 and RIA Novosti, Putin said Russia is military and technically ready for a nuclear conflict, but not soon. Russia will see US forces in Ukraine as interventionists, he said, adding that they are ready for any escalation.

The Russian leader recognized the US’s nuclear efforts but said they don’t always mean nuclear war. He noted that both states are modernizing and innovating their nuclear weapons.

For usage, weapons exist. We have our own ideals “Putin said that Russia’s large and diversified nuclear weapons arsenal may help it achieve strategic goals in a fight with the US or NATO.

The US intelligence community’s yearly declassified threat assessment worried about Putin’s nuclear use. Russia’s combat struggles in Ukraine heighten nuclear weapon deployment danger, according to the research.

Putin’s words complicate global tensions and geopolitical uncertainty, raising questions about nuclear deterrence, diplomatic measures, and the ramifications of such declarations.
