Atletico Madrid Beats Inter Milan in Penalty Shootout to Reach Champions League Quarterfinals
Atletico Madrid defeated Inter Milan in a thrilling penalty shootout to go to the Champions League quarterfinals. The thrilling last-16 match ended 2-2 on aggregate, but Atletico won 3-2 on Wednesday in the penalty shootout.
Inter won 1-0 at home in the opening leg, leaving Atletico behind at the Metropolitano. Their resilience allowed them to come back and force penalties.
After save Alexis Sanchez and Davy Klaassen, Atletico’s Jan Oblak was the shootout hero. Inter’s Yann Sommer stopped Saul Niguez’s shot. Atletico advanced as Lautaro Martinez missed the penalty that would have sent Inter through to the next round.
Oblak acknowledged the luck involved in penalty shootouts and stressed the significance of direction while reflecting on his performance. Despite the tension, he was thrilled to win and go to the quarterfinals.
The match was emotional, with Federico Dimarco’s 33rd-minute goal giving Inter the lead. Atletico scored two minutes later when Antoine Griezmann scored. Memphis Depay’s late goal tied the aggregate score in extra time, setting up the exciting penalty shootout.
Both teams had chances to win in extra time, but Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid won. Inter Milan, last season’s finalists, withdrew despite their efforts.
