Croatia’s Parliament Dissolved, Clearing Path for Upcoming Election

Published:

The dissolution of Croatia’s parliament sets up a parliamentary election later this year. The decision was supported by 143 of 151 legislators.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic has suggested the election might occur before the June 6-9 European Parliament voting. A date for the election has not been set.

Plenkovic and his conservative Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party are facing high-level corruption allegations, prompting parliament dissolution. Zagreb, the capital, saw hundreds of anti-government protesters last month, seeking an early parliamentary election.

Opposition parties push Plenkovic, who denies involvement. Center- and left-leaning parties have pledged to confront HDZ in the election. Since Croatian independence in 1991, HDZ has ruled.

Besides the legislative election, Croatia will have a presidential election before year’s end. The 3.8 million-person country relies significantly on tourism along its scenic Adriatic Sea coastline and is one of the EU’s poorer economies.
