Russian Activist Protests Putin in Armenian Mountains
Yuri Alekseyev, a Russian political activist, moved to a rural Armenian village to evade jail. He made his choice shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine.
Alekseyev moved to a remote Armenian village in May 2022 to avoid penalties for his anti-war attitude. He remembered hanging a “No to War” flag near his Russian home and being arrested and imprisoned for 15 days.
Though alone in his alpine home, Alekseyev advocates. He occasionally protests against Russian President Vladimir Putin outside the Russian consulate in Yerevan, 200 kilometers distant.
As a lawyer and programmer, Alekseyev’s opposition to Putin’s policies highlights his personal dangers and willingness to speak out. Despite hardship and distance, his narrative shows the resilience of opposition to authoritarian governments.
