Scientists discovered Noctis, a 450-km-diameter, 9-km-tall super volcano on Mars. The 55th LPS Meeting revealed this astonishing finding, which has made Martian exploration successful.
The Noctis volcano and an ice glacier beneath Mars’ surface near its equator were discoveries that shed light on the planet’s geological and environmental past. Ancient and active volcanoes are attractive biological research targets and may be the sites of future human colonies.
“Dr. Pascal Lee, the lead author of the SETI Institute and Mars Institute, brought the volcano’s deep erosion into the limelight, which had been covered for decades,” said Lee. The site’s collapsed volcanic crater and volcanic materials enhance its scientific nature.
Volcanoes are commonly located at water-ice intersections, making them ideal for astrobiology investigations and the Mars life quest.
Noctis volcano’s location on Mars’ easternmost side, near Ascraeus Mons and Arsia Mons, has provided us with a rare chance to study Mars’ past and biology.
