Former Football Star Dani Alves Granted €1 Million Bail Amid Rape Conviction Appeal

Published:

The Spanish courts have set the bail for a former Brazilian footballer Dani Alves at 1 million euros while he is waiting for his appeal hearing against the charges of rape against him. Alves, who denies the allegations, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months of prison for an event that is thought to have happened in a Barcelona nightclub at the time of the year back in 2022.

It had already been six months since January 2023 that Alves was in custody. Once, Alves had been denied bail due to the fear that he could flee the country, since extraditing Brazilian nationals to foreign countries is not the policy of Brazil. Nevertheless, upon the court’s hearing, it has finally granted him his bail on terms.

Besides the extensive amount of bail, Alves is also obliged to surrender both his Brazilian and Spanish passports and is banned from travelling to any other country. In addition, his intercourse with the victim is forbidden and he needs to report to the courthouse on a weekly basis. Though this is limited, she still has a home in the city.

The order was made after the prosecutor and the defense team appealed for Alves, respectively, to be acquitted and to be sentenced to nine years in prison. In addition to this, the lawyer of the victim is working for having the sentence be 12 years. In the next run, the case will be heard by the higher court in Barcelona, with a chance of expansion to the Supreme Court in Madrid.

Accordingly, Alves must pay the victim €150,000 in compensation and has been prohibited from being within a range of 1000 m near her residence or workplace for a period of 9 years. Thus, his contract with the Mexican club Pumas was terminated after his arrest and the last chapter of his career was written in that way, since he was a very successful footballer who played for the top tier clubs like Barcelona and achieved international fame with the Brazilian national team.
