Critical Slovakian Presidential Election Amid Ukraine Conflict

Published:

Slovaks will vote for a new president on Saturday, which might affect their attitude on the Ukraine war. The election comes amid debate about Slovakia’s stance on the Ukraine crisis and Russia.
Peter Pellegrini, 48, backed by the ruling populist party and wary of Ukraine, and Ivan Korcok, 60, a pro-Western former foreign minister, are the leading competitors. The election will choose the liberal successor to outgoing President Zuzana Caputova.

Presidents of Slovakia are mostly ceremonial, but they may ratify international treaties, appoint top judges, and lead the military. Parliamentary laws can be vetoed by the president.
Pellegrini leads Korcok by 1% in Focus’s latest pre-election survey, with 51% to 49% margin.
Slovakia’s foreign policy, notably its relations with the EU and NATO, will be affected by the election. The outcome may indicate whether Slovakia will support Russia or Western partners in the Ukraine crisis.
Amid international tensions and conflicts over the Ukraine crisis, the globe watches Slovaks vote to see how the election would affect the country’s future.
