Russia wiped out the largest power-generating center in the Kyiv region by its missiles which Russia used that as a reason to destroy Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that the attack was unacceptable and went on to accuse Western countries of being indifferent to the urgent need to provide Ukraine with more advanced air defenses.
Notwithstanding the Air Force of Ukraine downing 18 incoming missiles and 39 drones, Russia had been able to launch as many as 82 missiles and drones, including six hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, which were all unstoppable by Ukrainian defense. Fortunately, the operation resulted in no victims, and the power supply to Kyiv and nearby towns was not interrupted.
The Trypilska Thermal Power Plant, managed by the energy company Centrenergo, turned into a kind of a pile of ashes in the course of the attack. Centrenergo, which was forced to leave the energy production sector across its three plants as they were destroyed or occupied by the Russian troops and which now considers this event to be the greatest challenge in the company’s history, complained about the catastrophic loss.
This destructive act on Trypilska coincides with the fact that Russia is carrying out a campaign of aggression against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. In the past, strikes had already destroyed other power plants: the Zmiivska TPP in the Kharkiv region and the Vuhlehirska TPP in the Donetsk region. The sad result was a trail of destruction.
The main power company of Ukraine, DTEK, remarked a substantial destruction of its facilities by Russian missiles and drones strikes. The company underlined the critical issue of generating 80% of its power facilities being destroyed in the last weeks and called for international assistance, primarily in strengthening Ukraine’s air defense system.
The Ukrainian leader, President Zelensky, made an impassioned plea to the global community, underscoring the urgency of immediate aid, stating that not taking action is equal to providing a “global license for terror” to Russia.
