Since 2012, the Virginia Prize has been given out biennially to honor female photographers around the world. All eligible candidates must be professional photographers, regardless of their age or nationality. Their work ought to remain unpublished in France, barring commissions from the press and advertising. A prize of €10,000 is given to the winner to help in their creative pursuits.
Eight members of the artistic community make up the jury, and Sylvia Schildge is the permanent president. The jury chooses the award. The government has no influence over the choice, which is kept private. The panel presents ten photographers through other means in addition to the winner.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Eligibility: Any professional female photographer in the globe is eligible, regardless of age or nationality.
- Exclusions: Commissioned photos for press and advertising are not eligible.
- Exhibition Restrictions: While the artist’s other works may have been previously displayed in France, the images that are submitted cannot have.
- Application Process: There is no cost to apply, or contributions can be made through a network of worldwide professionals that includes gallery owners, reviewers, photo editors, and photographers’ agencies.
