Hungarian Striker Barnabás Varga Released from Hospital After Euro 2024 Injury

Published:

Hungarian striker Barnabás Varga has been discharged from the hospital following a severe injury he sustained during Hungary’s Euro 2024 match against Scotland on Sunday.

During the 1-0 win for Hungary, Varga collided with Scotland’s goalkeeper Angus Gunn in the second half, resulting in him falling to the ground. The Hungarian Football Association confirmed that Varga suffered a concussion and a broken cheekbone, which required surgery.

“Thank you for the many supportive messages. It’s good to be back home. Now comes a few weeks of rest,” said Varga, a player for Ferencváros, in a club statement after his release on Wednesday. He added that he had already reviewed the incident from the match.

The Hungarian FA announced Varga’s release from the Stuttgart hospital and confirmed he is now recovering at home in Hungary.

Hungary’s captain, Dominik Szoboszlai, called for changes in medical protocols after witnessing Varga’s injury. He emphasized the importance of immediate medical attention during such incidents. “If our doctors say we need someone immediately to help, then I don’t think they should walk,” Szoboszlai stated. He urged that medical staff should act promptly, regardless of the referee’s instructions, as seconds can be crucial in serious injuries.

UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, responded to the incident by stating that the intervention by the team doctor occurred within 15 seconds of the incident. The second stadium doctor followed immediately to assess the injury and provide treatment. UEFA assured that all medical staff coordinated professionally, and there was no delay in treating Varga.

Despite Hungary’s victory over Scotland, the team was eliminated from Euro 2024, finishing behind Germany and Switzerland in Group A. They also missed the chance to qualify as one of the best third-place finishers.
