Applications are being accepted for a graduate program offered by the African Centre for Cities (ACC) through the 2024 University of Cape Town Scholarship. All chosen candidates receive an annual stipend of $17,200 from the University of Cape Town Scholarship, which is renewable for three years. There will be extra money set aside for fieldwork and travel costs.

Applications are being accepted for scholarships under the DANIDA-funded CLAIMS to Energy Citizenship initiative through the African Centre for Cities (ACC) (2024–2028).
For the CLAIMS to Energy Citizenship initiative, the ACC has obtained financing for two master’s scholarships and two PhD places. This project, which consists of three work packages, is focused on energy transitions in South Africa.
WP1, under the direction of University of Copenhagen professor Karen Waltorp, focuses on activism and common behaviours pertaining to energy access.
WP2 at the African Centre for Cities, headed by Dr. Liza Cirolia, focuses on the sub-national state and the energy system transitioning processes.
The goal of WP3 is to combine knowledge from WP1 and WP2 to create a thorough understanding of infrastructure citizenship that takes into account many stakeholders and scales.
Eligibility Criteria:
- A master’s degree in anthropology, geography, sociology, urban studies, or a similar discipline is required of applicants.
- Candidates should be willing and able to undertake research in Khayelitsha, as well as have expertise performing field-based ethnographic research in underprivileged urban residential areas.
- Candidates must be dedicated to taking part in the project, which includes conducting research to further the organization’s goals and attending workshops and events.
- Candidates must be able and willing to go to Europe for training and exchange programs
- Proficiency in visual or multimodal anthropology, including podcasting, documentary filmmaking, or artistic endeavours
- expertise addressing energy-related challenges in the context of South Africa
- proficiency in isiXhosa
