Current French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal Steps Down in Wake of Legislative Polls

Which is why the French President, Emmanuel Macron, has agreed to the resignation of the Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal. The prime minister, 35 years old since the beginning of the year, and his government, will remain in office during the Paris Olympics to be held this summer before a new head of government is appointed. In this case, Attal and his supporting team will remain as a transitional government to maintain the existence of the state while not taking major political measures.

The matter of choosing a new prime minister has been made difficult by the outcome of the legislative elections. New Popular Front (NFP) which obtained the most seats is a left-wing alliance and is yet to agree on a presidential candidate. On Monday evening the Socialists, Communists and Greens nominated Laurence Tubiana, a diplomat and one of the spear heads of the Paris Agreement. Nevertheless, her candidature was refused by the main party of the alliance, France Unbowed (LFI). LFI’s coordinator Manuel Bompard called her candidacy not serious, which she has joined the ranks of the president Macron and called for the creation of an alliance with the party of Macron, which is considered by LFI as a betrayal of the program of the NFP.
