Plane Crash in Nepal Kills 18, Pilot Sole Survivor

Published:

At takeoff in Kathmandu, Nepal, a passenger airliner crashed Wednesday, killing 18 passengers and leaving the pilot alone. The pilot was recovered from the smoldering wreckage and is undergoing medical care, Nepali police said.

The Saurya Airlines flight comprised two crew and 17 personnel. Local time was 11:15 am when the incident occurred. Initial reports say the jet caught fire after sliding on the runway (the reason is currently under investigation).

The flight was for engineering or maintenance. Foreign passenger nationality is being determined for one deceased passenger. Soldiers help recover the seriously damaged plane’s fuselage.

Despite Nepal’s tremendous aviation growth, safety challenges exist owing to poor training, maintenance, and terrain. Nepal’s terrible aviation safety record led the EU to prohibit its carriers.

near January 2023, a Yeti Airlines jet crashed near Pokhara, killing 72 people. Nepal’s worst crash was a 1992 Pakistan International Airlines aircraft that killed 167.
