The Gilchrist Fieldwork Award was founded in 1990 by the Gilchrist Educational Trust, which also provides all funding, ownership, and distribution of the award. On the other hand, the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) manages operational management for a charge. The RGS caters to a wide range of public and professional audiences, including its 16,000 members, in its capacity as a charity, learned society, and professional organization. Their yearly outreach to millions of individuals is part of their efforts to promote geography and assist geographers. The study of geography offers a strong foundation for combining many academic disciplines, allowing geography majors to make a substantial impact on resource and environmental management. This comprehensive education promotes social and environmental awareness, accountability, and life skills. Geographical knowledge, whether acquired through formal schooling or hands-on learning experiences like fieldwork and travel, enables people to be more knowledgeable professionals and citizens.
An annual £15,000 grant known as the Gilchrist Fieldwork Award is given to research teams that have the best ideas for expanding our understanding of geography through difficult fieldwork abroad. In order to show real local benefits, it emphasizes strong relationships with local agencies and communities and seeks to allow high-quality research and data collecting in a single field session.
