African economic policy research and training are the main goals of the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), a public, non-profit organization founded in 1988. According to AERC, professional economists with local training and experience are necessary for sub-Saharan Africa to experience sustained development. Through policy research and graduate training, the Consortium supports the development of economic policy competence in Francophone and Anglophone African countries.
The 2024–2025 Ph.D. scholarships are now being offered by AERC to deserving candidates from Francophone and Anglophone sub-Saharan African nations. The following universities offer scholarships to students accepted into their AERC Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP) in Economics:

- University of Benin, Nigeria
- Félix Houphouet-Boigny University, Côte d’Ivoire
- University Cheikh Anta Diop, Senegal
- University of Ibadan, Nigeria
- University of Nairobi, Kenya
- University of Yaoundé II, Cameroon
- University of Pretoria, South Africa
- University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applied to and been accepted into any of the CPP universities on the list.
- obtained, from an authorized university, a minimum of a Second-Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a similar discipline.
- Possess a Master’s degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or similar subjects (including coursework and a thesis component) from an accredited university. The curriculum should cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and econometrics.
- Having at least one pertinent publication in a peer-reviewed journal will be beneficial.
- An additional benefit will be proof of participation in economic management, research, and/or training in the public sector.
- We encourage applications from female candidates as well as those from fragile and post-conflict regions.
