Why the Oceans are Earth’s Secret Superheroes in the Climate Crisis

Published:

Did you know Earth’s unsung climate change superheroes are the oceans? Over 70% of our earth produces half of our oxygen and absorbs 25% of our carbon dioxide. The oceans catch 90% of the extra heat from these sources, controlling our climate.

Unfortunately, our oceans are in jeopardy. They face tremendous problems from pollution, plastics, and deep-sea mining. Mining the ocean floor for minerals for electric car batteries and wind turbines may sound greener, but critics say it might damage marine ecosystems irreparably.

Thanks to global efforts, these essential waters are being protected. The 2023 High Seas Treaty protects marine life by creating extensive oceanic protected areas. Much remains to be done.

You can do what? Start small—join a beach cleanup, eat sustainable seafood, or monitor UK shoreline seaweed biodiversity. Every action helps, and collectively, we can keep the seas our planet’s greatest partner against climate change. Dive in, splash, and help!
