Monsoon Fury in Gujarat: 28 Dead, 30,000 Homeless as Floods Devastate State

Published:

In the previous three days, heavy monsoon rains and floods in Gujarat, India, have killed at least 28 people and displaced nearly 30,000. Rivers breached their banks, drowning vehicles, roads, and homes as many walked waist-deep to find safety from the incessant rain.

The Gujarat state government recorded 13 drownings and others killed by collapsed buildings and trees. Around 1,000 villages are without power, compounding their suffering.

Disaster and army officials worked hard to rescue 1,856 people in Vadodara, one of the worst-hit cities. Despite the destruction, factories like Reliance’s world-largest oil refinery in Jamnagar continue to operate. However, authorities prioritise rescue and assistance.

Experts blame climate change for the region’s changing weather patterns and increased extreme weather events. The IMD has predicted further severe rain, with Bharuch, Kutch, and Saurashtra districts in Gujarat expecting exceptionally heavy downpours.

As Gujarat prepares for more challenges, the disaster highlights the need for climate resilience and preparedness in sensitive regions. The deep depression near Gujarat’s coast is anticipated to deepen into a cyclonic storm, so authorities are on high alert.
