For the first time in 30 years, Azerbaijan will hold early parliamentary elections on Sunday across its entire territory, including districts newly liberated from Armenian domination. This milestone election has over 6.4 million registered voters, with voting locations open from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.
990 individuals will compete for 125 seats in Azerbaijan’s National Assembly. This early election follows President Ilham Aliyev’s June 28 decision to dissolve the government and hold elections on September 1. It was intentionally rescheduled to avoid conflict with the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku from November 11-22.
This election is crucial because it reflects Azerbaijan’s changing regional dynamics and geographical changes. The voting process in recently liberated territories marks a new chapter in Azerbaijani history and emphasizes democratic engagement in these regions.
The results of the election will shape Azerbaijan’s governance and policy, affecting both local and international issues.
