Uruguayan superstar Luis Suarez retires from international football.

Uruguayan great Luis Suarez retired from international football. The 37-year-old striker, noted for his passion and goal-scoring ability, cried as he announced that Uruguay’s World Cup qualifying match against Paraguay will be his last.

The 2007 Uruguay debutant Suarez has left an everlasting imprint on the team. He is Uruguay’s all-time best scorer with 69 goals in 142 matches. Thinking about his decision, Suarez remarked, “I’ve considered this and think now is the best moment. I want my final national team game to be peaceful and exciting like my first in 2007.

In nine major tournaments for Uruguay, Suarez has been crucial. He made headlines at the 2010 World Cup with his disputed handball in the quarterfinal against Ghana, which contributed to Uruguay’s penalty shootout win. He helped Uruguay win the 2011 Copa America in Argentina as the tournament’s second-highest scorer.

Suarez’s international career was controversial. After biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in a 2014 World Cup group stage encounter, he was suspended for four months and nine games. With regard to his career, Suarez said, “We faced many tough moments, especially after my mistake in 2014, but I have no regrets.”

Despite the scandals, Suarez played in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and five Copa Americas for Uruguay. Uruguay lost one of its greatest players when he retired.

Suarez’s enthusiasm, skill, and dedication made him one of Uruguayan football’s most memorable personalities. Fans worldwide will remember his contributions to the beautiful game when he retires.
