Russian Missile Hits Turkish Cargo Ship Near Romania, Ukraine Blames Moscow

Published:

Kyiv and Bucharest officials said that a Russian missile hit a Turkish-operated cargo ship going for Ukraine 48 kilometers off Romania’s coast on Thursday. A Russian bomber’s missile attacked Romania’s exclusive economic zone beyond national seas.

Despite photographs from his office showing catastrophic ship damage, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said no casualties were recorded. Romania’s Defense Minister, Angel Tîlvăr, called the Black Sea a “space of cooperation” that has become a “war theatre.”

Romania criticized the strike as Russia’s unlawful and aggressive action against Ukraine. Romania’s Foreign Ministry called the event an unusual escalation in Russia’s aggression and stressed that striking a civilian cargo ship violates international humanitarian law.

Officials from the U.S. called the strike a breach of international law and a threat to world food security, considering the ship’s role in bringing foodstuffs to Ukraine.

The Kremlin’s spokesperson denied knowledge of the strike and dismissed Ukraine’s charges.

The strike illustrates escalating Black Sea tension and worldwide marine security dangers as Russia pursues its war in Ukraine.
