The health ministry reported two deaths and 29 injuries in Zagazig, Egypt, when two trains collided. The horrific event in Al Sharkia governorate prompted emergency medical services to arrive. 30 ambulances and specialised medical staff helped the patients, who were sent to Al-Ahrar and Zagazig University hospitals. Rescue efforts continue.
Images from the area show wrecked trains and enormous crowds watching emergency services rescue people.
Egyptian railways have a history of fatalities. The country has seen hundreds of rail disasters owing to ageing infrastructure and safety difficulties in recent years. A similar catastrophe in 2021 killed 32 and wounded 165. A 2017 Alexandria collision killed over 40 people, and the 2002 Cairo-Luxor passenger train fire killed over 360.
Despite multiple incidents over the previous two decades, Egypt struggles to upgrade its train infrastructure, a safety worry for civilians.
Egypt’s ageing railway infrastructure is regularly blamed for similar calamities, but authorities are probing the latest event.
