Seizing tensions on the Lebanon – Israel border the US with some European and Middle-Eastern partners has urged an immediate 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. This request is made with a view to opening a diplomatic window and ceasing further escalation of violence that has led to the deaths of more than 600 people in Lebanon within recent days.
The joint statement was issued during the UN GA and called both Israel and Lebanon to abide the ceasefire agreements. The expectation here is that, the cessation of hostilities for peaceful negotiations will bring sustainable solutions to the problems along the border and, in effect put a stop to the encroachment of the conflict within the region.
American experts suggested that while Hezbollah itself may not ratify the ceasefire, the Lebanese government could create conditions for its fulfillment. They also want Israel to embrace this development as well.
proposal has received support from the US and its allies including France, Germany, the UK, Canada and several of the gulf nations. Currently, the new Biden administration has been quite engaged in overseas diplomacy with Biden himself, and particularly his Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in the forefront.
The ceasefire is meant to solve not only the current conflict with Hezbollah but also to currently frozen negotiations about the ceasefire between Israel and Gaza’s Hamas rulers. This conflict has persisted for almost a year now with a lot of loss of lives most of which are innocent civilians.
As for the Lebanese side, Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati has supported the plan while the response from the Israeli side will be expected shortly. They demanding cease-fire is a united effort by the international actors aimed at avoiding the escalation of the conflict and promoting the path to stability throughout the region.
