Iran has fired more than 180 ballistic missiles at Israel to increase tensions and worry of significant regional war. The missile attack activated air raid signals throughout Israel, millions went into refuge as missiles illuminated the cities including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.
Israel said that majority of the missiles were shot down mainly with the help from the United States while the rest landed as planned. One of them, two people were injured by shrapnel, with injuries described as minor. The Israeli military said that Iran’s actions were a “provocation” and threatened that there would be consequences.
Iran said the Revolutionary Guards were responsible for the attack as a response to the recent assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, along with an Iranian general. The Iranian state media said their missiles targeted and struck military air bases and other targets inside the Israeli territories.
This attack followed Israel launching an operation to enter southern Lebanon to dismantle Hezbollah assets, with the military saying it sought to continue to safeguard inhabitants in northern Israel from threats. The attack on the Israeli border came as Israel has been waging cross-border skirmishes with Hezbollah, an Iran-backed group, for nearly a year since the Gaza war with Hamas.
The missile barrage was followed by a statement issued by the UN Secretary-General urging an immediate ceasefire to put an end to further violence in the Middle East region; US officials also criticized the attack, calling it ‘defeated and ineffective’ and further threatened ‘severe consequences’.
Regarding the missile attack, Israeli Prime Minister declared that the campaign against what he called Iran’s “axis of evil” would continue and the country will fight and win in the difficult days in front of it. At the same time, the US military has declared its intention to send more fighter squadrons to the region in order to check further aggression.
This is another act in a sequence of incidents, the conflict between Iran and its ‘Axis of Resistance’ proxies increasing steadily as they seek to assert their influence across the Middle East. The situation remains unchanged and remains highly unstable and conflict may occur at regional level.
